Summer Health Academy - Program Information

The HCOP Summer Health Academy will provide activities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds transferring to UHM to enhance their successful entry into a health degree program and timely completion, increase their understanding of the health care professions, and develop a peer and UH support network. Due to COVID-19, the activities will be virtual this summer.
 
Summer Program
2021 Summer Program Dates: June 14, 2021 — July 2, 2021

Summer activities and core components include: 
  • Assessments (career, learning skills, personality type inventory).
  • Sessions on common healthcare issues.
  • Communication skills (oral and written) and research training.
  • Health career resources and mentoring support.
  • Cultural awareness activities.
  • Ohana (family) orientation for incoming students and their families.
Continuing Academic Support
Support activities throughout the subsequent academic year will be provided to ensure a smooth transition to UHM.  Academic support will be provided through advising and connection to resources. 
 
Continuing support activities include:
  • Academic advising and understanding of degree requirements, extra-curricular activities, and financial aid.
  • Peer mentoring, social networking, and leadership development through extracurricular activities.
  • Exploration of health careers.
  • Service learning projects.
